The curious economics of lighters and umbrellas
No one owns them. You rarely seem to have one when you need one. I know I’ve never bought either, but have had numerous in my possession over the years. They sort of pass from person to person in a ghost economy of being left behind in pubs and on trains, where finding them means they are now yours for a brief, transient period, only to be passed on to someone else just before you actually needed to use one of them.
