A shot of JD

Jonathan Deamer's tumblelog: for when proper writing is just too much effort. if you want, follow me on Twitter or take a random shot.

Marco says:

“Many people post the same content in multiple places. For example, people frequently use Tumblr’s feed-import feature to copy Flickr photos, Delicious links, and Twitter messages to Tumblr […] it’s incredibly wasteful. What happens to responses? Where does Google point?”

Interesting. I initially intended to use Tumblr like this - as a way of compiling my various online presences, eg. in my case social network statuses, Google Reader shared items, Wordpress blog posts, Last FM info etc. - but soon realised it was much better used in its intended “online scrapbook” form. Not just for the reasons Marco stated (which are all true), but also because the auto-formatting on Tumblr’s feed import feature just turned it all into a jumbled mess, often with no regard for the original chronology of postings.

The bit about Google is especially valid, what with repeated posts having a negative effect on search rankings. However, I do think there’s an argument for a service that aggregates together all the above as a “one-stop-shop-for-you” online. Virb doesn’t quite cut it yet. At the moment I’m using Jonathan Deamer dot com for this purpose - got this tumblelog in the sidebar, and Last FM / Facebook widgets on the about me page. Not a perfect solution, but it’ll do for the time being.
