This reminds me of the funky Mandarin compounds where conjoined antonyms refer to the continuum they are opposed on.

eg. the compound “big”+”small” means “size”, “long”+”short” means “length”, father”+”mother” means “parents”, “left”+”right” means “thereabouts” and “buy”+”sell” means “business”.
