Looking forward to Brian Eno’s new album of “spoken word music” (listen and that’ll make sense).

I loved last year’s “Small Craft On A Milk Sea” - when I first heard about this one I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it as much as I’m mostly into Eno’s instrumental/ambient stuff, but this and the track on his recent NPR show sound really promising.

Goth, having started in the 1970’s, now has MANY over-50 adherents. I often say that Goth, Punk and Metal are the only “lifetime membership” subgenres. It’ll be interesting to see if Hip Hop becomes the next one, and btw THANK GOD rave didn’t, amirite?

It kinda did, if you count all the former Hacienda regulars who now have substance-induced short-term memory problems.

Great moments in bad metadata: For years, I’ve been playing “Mumur”, not Murmur. I just noticed this.
Meanwhile, REM obsessives browsing Last.fm are hyperventilating that there’s a rare album pressing they’ve not heard of.

People still genuinely care about the MTV VMAs

danhacker:

This is what I find most shocking, I’m honestly not surprised about Kanye’s antics at all.

Good point. I remember when big awards bashes (the Brits here in the UK) used to be one of the few times in a year I could see live music on television and they were genuinely exciting occasions. But especially given that there’s now little need for the tastemaker purpose they may have once served, I really don’t see why people care anymore.  Maybe a middle-aged mother might, but all the people tweeting and blogging about Kanye’s outburst are surely savvy enough to use Teh Internetz for discovering/watching music etc.

Smashing Pumpkins - “Mayonaise”

inthefade:

[…] one of my favorite songs ever.

stuffparty:

Oddly enough I didn’t find Siamese Dreams (that’s the right album, right?) in my iTunes. The Pumpkins used to be my favourite band and I know I have that album. How it never made it into iTunes is a mystery to me.

One of my favourite songs ever too. And still my favourite band, after being into them for about 13 years. (Old habits die hard).

What are the top 3 issues currently facing music and the arts?

A good question asked by my former lecturer Maria Barrett on Twitter.

In almost tweet-like brevity, off the top of my head I’d say:

1. Outmoded laws and attitudes around copyright/ownership/licensing.

2. Shifting consumption habits (it’s bigger than MP3).

3. Public misunderstanding of value/cost (probably the industry’s fault though).

Comment with your own or tweet (@MariaBarrett or hashtag #CIAM).
